All heat exchangers transfer heat energy between two or more fluid media contained in channels. These channels scale or foul over time, accompanied by declining performance and higher fuel bills. If your facility uses old technology shell and tube heat exchangers, you will have higher fuel bills, plus a more frequent cleaning burden than with plate heat exchangers. Why? Because flow through plate heat exchangers is more turbulent, promoting more immediate heat transfer between the channels. At the same time, the turbulence produces a natural scouring effect that keeps the heat exchange surfaces cleaner, longer.

If you operate your thermal systems at one optimized load all the time, properly sized plate and shell and tube exchangers would consume the same amount of fuel to do their jobs, whether heating or cooling. When service time arrives, it is a fact that a shell and tube heat exchanger is considerably more labor intensive to service than a plate heat exchanger. Its long tube bundle requires twice the length of the unit to remove, along with requiring specialized equipment and labor to remove the bundle. Once removed, the tube bundle can be extremely difficult to clean completely because of tight spaces between the tubes.
PRACTICAL CLEAN IN PLACE POSSIBILITIES
The high turbulence within the plate heat exchanger makes clean-in-place procedures normally much more effective with plate heat exchangers. Appropriately selected cleaning solutions can be pumped through each channel. The same high turbulence that enhances heat exchanger performance also helps to dissolve and remove contamination without any disassembly required.
PRACTICAL DISASSEMBLY AND SERVICE PROCEDURES
If disassembly is necessary, the heat exchange surfaces are 100% available for physical cleaning, or in the case of our shell and plate models, appropriate for agitated chemical bath cleanout for the closed channel. The shell side channel can be cleaned using a special fluid/brush attachment for a pressure washer.
